And found that Costco Travel had best car rental rates with built in coupon codes. I don't mind the trip leaving SLC going to the parks as much as I dread leaving the parks and making the trip back, just because you want to make sure and have plenty of time to catch the plane.Įxactly what we just did. We were surprised by how many llamas we saw between SLC and Grand Teton on our last trip. Another time, we went through bear lake and got raspberry milkshakes, which were quite delicious and very different. On our trip in May, kid wanted to see Golden Spike, so we left Grand Teton super early and detoured on the way to SLC. At least in May and September, there is a lot of wildlife between IDA and West Yellowstone as we've seen moose and elk there. I have done the drive from SLC many times and have done the drive from IDA many times. By the time you factor in the time you wait on the connecting flights, it doesn't really save you a lot of time, just wear and tear on your body!. I always check Idaho Falls as I have found that for us it is usually about the same price as SLC and sometimes the rental car is actually less and it is about 2 1/2 hours from either Old Faithful or Grand Teton. Hard to wrap my mind around what this driving feels like when the scenery is SO gorgeous! Just know it's a drive heavy trip so want to be sure I'm not adding unnecessary mileage to it. Possible 1 night Cody (is that worth it for rodeo, old west town feel?) SLC with either an overnight stop in Afton or straight to Jackson Hole And a direct flight which saves us a good 3 hours or so in air travel time.īut is it worth it? Will I regret the longer drive to get to Tetons/Yellowstone? Looks like Salt Lake City would save us between $400 and $1200 in airfare (Billings/Bozeman is next cheapest, Jackson most expensive). We are a family of 4 (kids are 10 and 6) who will be flying from the east coast (DC) for a 10 day trip to Yellowstone/Grand Tetons. Is it just me or is there a big learning curve to planning a Yellowstone/Teton trip? :)
